The plan that fits
Pro
$20a month
$200 a year on annual billing. At least 5x the free plan's usage per 5-hour session.
That's about 3 hours of Sonnet-level work a day and 15 hours a week. This is a rule of thumb, not an Anthropic number. Anthropic doesn't publish message counts, only that every plan resets on a rolling 5-hour window, with weekly limits on top.
- When to upgrade: if the limit stops you more than twice a week, move to Max 5x for $80 more a month. If it only happens now and then, turn on usage credits instead. They're billed at API rates, so you only pay for the extra.
- The same Claude in Cursor: Cursor's plans don't include Claude. You'd pay $30 a month for Premium, plus every token at API price (Sonnet 5.5: $2 in, $10 out per million). Cursor vs Claude Code

Claude Code isn't sold on its own. It comes with the paid Claude plans, and it uses the same allowance as your normal Claude chats. I'm Robin, and these days I let Claude write most of my code, so here's what each plan costs and what you get. Every number is from Anthropic's own pages, checked 2026-10-22.
| Plan | Price | Usage per 5-hour session |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No Claude Code |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 a year) | At least 5x the free plan |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5x Pro |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20x Pro |
| Team, Standard seat | $25 a seat a month, $20 billed annually | 1.25x Pro |
| Team, Premium seat | $125 a seat a month, $100 billed annually | 6.25x Pro |
| API (pay per token) | Sonnet 5.5: $2 in, $10 out. Opus 5.5: $4 in, $20 out. Per million tokens. | No plan limits, you pay for what you use |

Is Claude Code free?
No. Anthropic's setup docs say Claude Code needs a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account, and the free Claude plan doesn't include it. The cheapest way in is Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for the year up front.
How the usage limits work
There's no fixed number of messages on any plan. Instead, every plan has a limit that resets on a rolling 5-hour window, and paid plans add a weekly limit on top that counts all models. Claude Code and your chats on claude.ai share the same allowance, so a long chat in the afternoon leaves less for building in the evening.
When you hit the limit, you can wait for the reset or turn on usage credits, which let you keep working at standard API rates. That's the cheap fix if you only run out now and then. If it happens most days, the next plan up is usually the better deal.
Pro vs Max: which one do you need?
Pro is for building in the evenings or on a side project. Max 5x gives you five times Pro's usage per session for $100, and Max 20x gives you twenty times for $200. Anthropic lists no annual discount for Max.
Max also includes monthly API credits: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. They're easy to misread. They don't cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, the desktop app or your editor, and they expire at the end of each billing cycle. They're for scripts and apps that call Claude with an API key.
My advice is the same as in the calculator: start with Pro. If the limit keeps stopping you, go to Max 5x. You'll know within a week.
Subscription or API?
With an API key you pay for every token and there's no plan limit. That suits automation, like running Claude Code in a script or in CI. For building an app by hand it's hard to predict, because an agent reads a lot: your files, the errors, and everything again after each change. A subscription is one fixed price, and that's why I'd use one for day-to-day building.
Team plans are for 2 to 150 people. You can mix seats, Standard for people who use Claude now and then and Premium for the ones who build with it all day.
Claude Code vs Cursor pricing
If you're comparing with Cursor: since October 2026, Cursor's plans don't include Claude at all. On Cursor Premium you pay $30 a month, and then Claude at API list price on top. So if Claude is the model you want, Claude Code is the cheaper way to get it. I compared the two in Cursor vs Claude Code.
FAQ
Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or a pay-per-token API account. The free Claude plan doesn't include it. The cheapest option is Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually.
How much is Claude Code?
Claude Code is included in Claude's paid plans: Pro at $20 a month ($200 a year on annual billing), Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200 a month. Team seats are $25 (Standard) or $125 (Premium) a month, less on annual billing. On the API you pay per token instead: $2 in and $10 out per million tokens for Sonnet 5.5.
What is Claude Code's pricing per month?
$20 on Pro, $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, per person. Pro drops to $17 a month if you pay for a year. Team plans are per seat: $25 or $20 annually for Standard, $125 or $100 annually for Premium.
Is Claude Max worth it for Claude Code?
If Pro's limit stops you most days, yes. Max 5x gives you five times Pro's usage per 5-hour session, and Max 20x twenty times. If you only hit the limit now and then, turning on usage credits on Pro, billed at API rates, is usually cheaper than upgrading.
Does Claude Code share limits with the Claude chat?
Yes. Claude Code and your conversations on claude.ai draw from the same allowance, which resets on a rolling 5-hour window, with weekly limits on top on paid plans.
Do Max plan API credits work in Claude Code?
Not for interactive use. Max comes with $100 (Max 5x) or $200 (Max 20x) of API credits a month, but Anthropic says they don't cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web. They're for scripts and apps that call Claude with an API key, and they expire each billing cycle.
